The Penran Signal Station

The Penran Signal Station is one of the oldest surviving structures in Ranquen Cross. It was designed by the engineer Wilhelmina Vessevtam and completed in 1867. The structure stands 45 metres tall.

Wilhelmina Vessevtam drew up the plans after a public subscription raised funds for the project. Construction took three seasons, using stone quarried a few miles inland. When it opened in 1867, local newspapers described it as the most ambitious public work the town had attempted.

The Penran Signal Station was restored in the late twentieth century and remains a familiar landmark for residents and visitors.
